Boat Building in China - FAQ's

Q. Why should I have my boat built in China?
A. In short, to save money.

Q. Is the quality good?
A. It can be and should be. A lot depends on the boatyard and the the yacht building experience of its staff. It's the same the world over. We at Ocean Asia Inc construct our boats to ABYC - ABS standards. Should you require CE certification, let us know and we can modify accordingly.

Q. How can I be sure that my boat is being built in a good boatyard?
A. If you're not familiar with the boatyards in China, seek advice from people who are. There are several companies who offer this advice. But check their credentials and experience in China before commiting to them.

Q. What sort of track record should a boatyard have - how do I know of their previous experience in boat building?
A. Ideally, the boatyard should have experience in constructing the type of vessel that you intend to buy and be able to prove it. Several boatyards in China have been constructing pleasure craft and light commercial craft (smaller GRP passenger ferries, police and Coast Guard patrol boats) since the early 80's. Many of these pleasure craft were constructed as OEM projects for foreign distributors and dealers. Several internationally recognized brands are in fact constructed here in China. So the name of the boatyard rarely appears in brochures and magazine articles - just the brand name of the foreign-owned company that commissioned the construction.
But the boatyard will have photographs of the boats that they have built, either taken at their yard or in the water.

Q. China is a long way away from where I live, how can I be assured of the construction progress and the quality of the construction.
A. Unless you are prepared to visit China regularly and see for yourself, you are going to have to enter into an agreement to trust an experienced individual or company to inspect the vessel for you and submit regular reports and photographs taken of your boat under construction to ensure that the vessel is built according to the specifications.

A.
